Speaking at a virtual shareholders event, Daimler chairman and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, Ola Kallenius has said that the upcoming Mercedes-Benz EQS EV will have an electric range of around 700 kilometres or 435 miles as per the WLTP standard. Kallenius didn’t confirm if the EQS that will be sold in the U.S. market will have a similar range. The EQS is will receive an EPA mileage rating when it’s close to a U.S. release, allowing users to ascertain for themselves if the EV can actually run that long.
This is clearly a consequence of Tesla’s aggressive push to cross the 400 miles barrier with the Model S. This will hopefully set a standard in the EV market in the years to come. Tesla lists the Model S Long Range on its European page with a WLTP mileage of 610 km (379 miles), so it’s possible that the company’s site hasn’t been updated with the latest Long Range Plus model that breached the 400 mile mark recently.
It is typically found that the EPA rating is usually lower and more in line with real-world performance as compared to the WLTP rating, though the jury is still out on that. The New European Driving Cycle or NEDC rating for the Tesla Model S Long Range is listed at 660 km (410 miles), so it’s clear that this standard is seen as providing a more generous mileage rating as compared to the EPA or even the WLTP.
One of Tesla’s key rivals over the coming years will be Lucid. Though the company hasn’t launched a vehicle yet, its first official EV, the Lucid Air, will hit the markets in 2021. Interestingly, Lucid has mentioned that the Air will offer an electric range of more than 400 miles, making it a direct competitor to the Model S Long Range Plus. However, there are going to be several more EVs that offer 400-mile plus range when the Air hits the market.
