With General Motors ramping up its electric vehicle efforts, one of its most recognizable brands, Cadillac, was left behind. That changed in August last year when the company unveiled a concept of the Cadillac Lyriq EV. The manufacturer is now unveiling the production version of the EV.
Much to our surprise, the EV looks almost identical to the concept version shown off by Cadillac last year. The production model unveiled today retains the 33-inch infotainment system coupled with the wood and metal trims that we saw on the concept.
While it’s good to know about the design similarities, Cadillac also revealed some specific details on the hardware it’s packing. The company said that the Lyriq EV will only be available in a single-motor rear-wheel-drive version at launch. The motor would be capable of generating 340 horsepower and 325 pound-feet (lb-ft) of torque.
The automaker went on to say that the Lyriq EV will run on a 100 kWh battery pack, though it didn’t mention if this is the overall capacity or just the usable capacity.
Although the manufacturer couldn’t provide precise details on range, Cadillac said that the Lyriq EV should run for more than 300 miles on a single charge. The Lyriq EV will also support 19.2 kW Level 2 and 190 kW DC fast charging.
Unfortunately, there’s no mention of an 800 volt DC fast-charging system unveiled with the GMC Hummer EV, though it’s likely to be made available later. Cadillac said that it will also offer an all-wheel-drive version of the Lyriq EV later.
The manufacturer went on to say that the Lyriq EV will be offered in Silver and Black colors, adding a Silver version later. Expectedly, the EV will also come with features like GM’s Super Cruise accompanied by noise cancellation, a 19-speaker AKG Studio audio system, to name a few.
Cadillac will take reservations for the EV in September this year, while production is expected to start by early 2022 and deliveries beginning shortly after. As for pricing, the base model of the Lyriq EV will cost $59,990, putting it in the company of the multiple EVs in this segment, including the Tesla Model Y, which costs around $10,000 lesser.
