Yield Guild Games is one of the largest blockchain gaming communities, and it has successfully raised more than $1.45 million to help people in the Philippines affected by Typhoon Odette. In a recent transparency report, YGG detailed that it helped more than 3000 households. Donations helped purchase items of primary necessity like food, lighting, and other disaster relief products.

Typhoon Odette hit the Philippines on December 16th and was quickly recognized as a Category 5 super typhoon. The devastating effects of the powerful winds affected thousands of people across the country.

As Yield Guild Games has strong ties to the Philippines, Country Manager Luis Buenaventura quickly organized a donation mission. In the first couple of days alone, gamers from all over the world donated crypto and fiat, gathering more than $110.000 for immediate relief. Since then, the relief efforts have grown considerably, and the mission has raised over $1.45 million.

Yield Guild Games teams up with Axie Infinity fans

The Philippines are the first countries to adopt and start playing the play-to-earn wonder Axie Infinity. Considering the vast player base there, the game’s creators and several Axie Guilds were among the most involved in the relief efforts following Typhoon Odette.

Jihoz Zirlin, a co-founder of Axie Infinity, donated 1,000 AXS worth about $55,400 on Christmas Day when the donation happened. Additionally, according to the transparency report, most donations going into Yield Guild Games wallets come in either AXS or SLP.

Axie Infinity is not the only community looking to help families affected by the typhoon. While Axie has created one of the biggest play-to-earn communities out there, other platforms are also joining in the efforts.

Play-to-earn communities give back

Harmony-based DeFi Kingdoms held a community vote and approved a $500,000 donation from the game’s treasury. Additionally, the founders of the play-to-earn platform decided to support their community’s decision even further by adding $250.000 of their own funds to the donation.

In addition, Crazy Defense Heroes also organized a donation campaign that gave 1 TOWER token for every unique active wallet on the platform. The campaign lasted between December 21st and December 31st. According to DappRadar coverage, this amounted to more than 1.2 million TOWER tokens sent towards alleviating the damage from Typhoon Odette.

The play-to-earn phenomenon has taken the gaming world by storm. However, one of the most important aspects of this phenomenon is the incredible community play-to-earn projects create. Gamers gather together to enjoy playing with and against each other to earn rewards. Importantly, when a part of that community needs help, everyone else chips in.

Yield Guild Games has created one of the biggest relief campaigns following Typhoon Odette. Gathering together the help and capabilities of huge gaming communities has helped the guild to generate an impressive amount of funds in a matter of weeks. Most importantly, this effort shows that play-to-earn communities have a real power to help people in need.
