You might know IOTA who was created back in 2017, who is an experimental cryptocurrency & an open source protocol which aims to provide a secured payment method regarding monetization of data. IOTA is quite different from the others cryptocurrencies, basically IOTA is based on the "Tangle", it isn't a blockchain but a generalization of a blockchain (there are no blocks, so it doesn't require the blocks validation).
As a result IOTA policy is quite unique. So recently IOTA just announced that they are going to test their future decentralization through 3 phases which are Pollen, Nectar & Honey. This will lead to IOTA 2.0 version, but how does this work and where is IOTA going ? Well let me drive you into it !
1. 3 phases : Pollen, Nectar & Honey :
It's not a recipe, but the words that IOTA chose to use for their decentralization project. If this is a bit disturbing, it will automatically lead to a brand new network (a 2.0 version) called "Coordicide" and will also lead to the death of the coordinator node who is actually centralizing the "Tangle". The main objective for IOTA is to be "more secure", we have witnessed few flaws in the current network therefore decentralization is necessary.
Basically Pollen is the first official test network, it will bring major changes, it is the foundation of a network without a coordinator, Pollen will be "the test" in order to validate Coordicide's White Book concepts. Then comes Nectar, it will be released in few weeks and concerns all the modules of the Coordicide network, it will be the test network with an incentive system. And finally Honey, Honey will contain all modules in accordance with the complete and final specification of Coordicide, the network will have been tested and secured by several hundred hours of testing, therefore Honey will be considered as the first version of IOTA 2.0, the fully decentralized IOTA core network.
2. What to expect in the future regarding IOTA :
Pollen was launched on June 30 and so is already in testnet. Among novelties we can pull out : tokenized assets, the integration of Prometheus & Grafana who are the 2 node operators and can monitor multiple metrics, or feeless Applications. Pollen lays the new foundation of what IOTA will look like in the near future.
The 3 words represent the manufacture of honey, basically because bees work as a team for the greater good, IOTA's development team is exactly in this state of mind and wanted to express it by naming the different phases of the project like that. A huge team work awaits IOTA's team & its community in order to reach "the honey pot" that is decentralization.
All in all this project could lead to the total renewal of IOTA, with massive changes, a new policy, with multiple feature updates like Fast Probabilistic Consensus, Value Transactions, and Building Blocks for feeless dApps. A more secure network in order to avoid too recurring flaws, IOTA's future will surely be brighter than its present while looking to a whole new network.
