So, what is Algorand? It kind of sounds like some kind of complicated, tortuous math problem that you'd hoped would never be on that final exam. Well in a sense you're kind of correct. Algorand first and foremost is a cryptocurrency and blockchain protocol that aims to be simultaneously scalable, secure, and decentralized. When using Algorand, its protocol has 2 layers. The first layer has many capabilities including running smart contracts, which run on command without error and the results untampered. Atomic transfers allow the synchronic transferring of assets to multiple parties securely. The Rekeying feature allows more flexibility, continuity and operational efficiency when changing the Private Spending key. Algorand Standard Assets (ASAs) provide a standardized mechanism with flexibility to represent any type of asset on the Algorand blockchain. Some uses of this include: asset tokenization, 3rd party asset issuance, and cross border transactions without the middle man. Now the 2nd layer to Algorand's protocol provides off-chain contacts for the "long tail" part of smart contracts which require more customization.
Now, this platform is built around a novel proof of stake (PoS) consensus mechanism known as 'Pure Proof of Stake (PPoS)'. It's designed to be a quick, fair and just consensus system which enables all stakeholders or ALGO token holders (such as myself) to participate in block production and earn rewards.
