While most of Apple, Facebook or Samsung efforts are geared towards Wearable , Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) devices; one could still wonder if the rise of satellite communications and open wireless standard like CBRS or Wifi7 may not give a second life and a new wave of freedom for the most distributed devices on the planet today: Smartphones
The “DePIn” (Decentralized Physical Infrastructure) movement is growing, started by the Firechat app, and based around the idea that core civilizational infrastructure can be decentralized. Energy, communications, freedom of information can be powered by billions of regular people. We believe this all starts with the smartphone.
In 2023, the number of global smartphone users is estimated at 6.8 billion, marking a 4.2% annual increase. Soon there will be more smartphones in use than people.
Now are we building a phone? Not yet. But we wanted to share with the world our vision for what the perfect smartphone would look like.
Open Source Hardware
The hardware is broken into four modules, which are easily user replaceable. Modules are made from injection-molded carbon nanotubes and are supported by a forged magnesium alloy chassis, one of civilization’s strongest and lightest metals.
Screen and Chassis
Crafted from sandblasted magnesium alloy forging, the smartphone chassis is a unifying structure for all its components, including the antennas and front screen. The open-source hardware design enables individuals to create improved modules on the same chassis, such as a more advanced camera, a higher-performing CPU, or an expanded battery. The modules are interconnected through USB-C, RF, and a shared power bus.
Unlike other modular smartphones, the Ideal Mobile Phone interconnects use common, off-the-shelf, board-to-board connectors. Modules are waterproofed using over-molded seals and stainless steel screws. This reduces complexity and is a hybrid between Project Ara and the Fairphone.

Compute and Wireless Module
This module holds the “brains” of the smartphone. The bootloader is unlocked. You genuinely own the hardware. The compute module’s heart is a Snapdragon multi-core processor and radio suite. Antenna ports can be accessed in the module housing to add external antennas and turn the phone into a stationary mesh node.
The smartphone is built with Satellite connectivity supported natively, enabling you to deploy mesh networks on the fly almost anywhere in the world.

Software and AI
The software is where the true magic of the Ideal Phone is unleashed. Based on an Android fork Lineage OS, the software and hardware are under your control, without the influence of centralized third parties.
Web 3.0 Ready
At the heart of the Ideal Mobile Phone OS is an open source hardware security module. This makes it easy to back up and recover your device with decentralized cloud backup. A set of Tangem Hardware security cards is included, which allows you to recover your phone keychain backup if lost or stolen. You can download a backup of your phone to another Ideal Mobile Phone with only the key card.
The OS includes a decentralized password manager with native support for FIDO passkeys. The Password manager makes it easy to manage login, and pushes us towards a passwordless future.
Dapp Store
The Ideal Phone includes a decentralized app store built on IPFS. Apps are signed by developers and audited by trusted third parties, allowing a higher level of security than available on centralized app stores or by sideloading apps from the internet. The Dapp store takes a 0% cut on in-app purchases; developers must pay for the file to be hosted in NODL tokens or any other Polkadot parachain-supported token.
AI OS onboard
Modern Chat software like OpenAI is way ahead of the competition. The Turing test has long been passed, and it’s time for modern smartphones to support state-of-the-art AI. The OS supports AI built into all aspects of the user experience.
With new models like LLaMa, GPT-4 style services can be performed locally onboard the phone. The AI onboard accelerates all your actions, from filling up a form on a website to assisting you during your messaging experience. For example, booking airline tickets or hotels with a simple command.
The OS supports a next-generation AI assistant that can answer complex questions and perform actions based on your needs. It can help accelerate your work after identifying your patterns and habits. For example, it can automatically classify screenshots of contacts, social networks, and any other apps.
Camera shots can automatically generate tags and metadata based on computer vision and segmentation algorithms to help you make sense of any image or video, search, index, or monetize content
Decentralized Wireless
What makes a phone a phone is its ability to communicate. The Ideal Mobile Phone sports mesh networking natively, allowing users to locate nearby friends, share internet amongst each other, message offline, and build a self-sustainable infrastructure together. Connectivity is managed by a Connectivity App, which allows users to earn crypto by sharing connectivity with nearby users and other smart devices.
The mesh networking capability between devices offers open APIs for developers to take full advantage of mesh hardware and supports multiple peer-to-peer protocols, such as Bluetooth, BLE, Wi-Fi 6e, Wi-Fi 7, and LTE-Direct over CBRS. Hackers can access antennas to enhance coverage and turn smartphone nodes into fixed mesh base stations.
Messaging and Social Networking
Onboard mesh powers an online experience that is fully decentralized. Even without an eSIM, users can message for free using the Nodle Network or other Ideal Mobile Phones. Each mobile phone contributes securely to the network and can earn crypto by sharing tiny streams of data or a full broadband connection. This creates an economy of connectivity, allowing the Ideal Mobile Phone to work worldwide for free. The federated chat may be based on Berty, an open-source, decentralized messaging system with native mesh support. The social networking experience can leverage Nostr, an open protocol enabling a genuinely censorship-resistant global social network.
