The Ukrainian government says it plans to provide an airdrop to crypto donors on Thursday March 3rd. This initiative planned by the beleaguered country is the first of its kind, while it seeks to accrue funds towards efforts aimed at defending itself against Russia.

Following Ukraine’s confirmation of the crypto airdrop, host of The Coinist Podcast, Luke Martin released a statement on Twitter which read:

“Ukraine making history tomorrow by being the first nation state to airdrop a token to those that donated.”

However, the Eastern European country is yet to provide further details on the impending airdrop.

Ukraine has accrued more than $30 million from roughly 50,000 donations via unconventional crowdfunding means since February 26th. Donations have been varied and taken the form of several crypto tokens, including Ethereum (ETH), Polkadot (DOT) and Tether (USDT).

Leading decentralized exchange platform Uniswap is also using its resources to aid Ukraine’s efforts. The platform created a feature dubbed “Donate to Ukraine” where users can swap listed tokens into ETH donations for the country. This can reportedly be done in a single Ethereum transaction.

Presently, the novelty of the country’s crowdfunding and airdrop initiatives provides a potential roadmap for how traditional organizations view crypto. As Matthew Le Merle, managing partner of Blockchain Coinvestors, stated:

“While it is hard to determine the short-term impact from Ukraine’s crowdfunding and airdrop, the long-term impact can be very positive for blockchain adoption.”
