Street Fighter, an official licensed NFT digital collectibles game on the WAX blockchain, has seen a huge increase in users and transactions in the last 24-hours amidst the introduction of a new leaderboard.

At the time of writing users have surged 13,148% to over 11.3k whilst the number of transactions jumped over 3000% to 46.6k. Interestingly, the number of transactions in the last 7-days was just over 77,000 meaning that almost 60% of the transactions occurred within the last 24 hours.

Players start by opening packs of Street Fighter NFT build cards, then combining two matching build cards to unlock a new card with one of six rarities. Users can then continue upgrading that card’s power score by adding additional build cards. For each power score in your inventory, you get a point towards your leaderboard score.

The introduction of the leaderboard is a way to incentivize users to purchase more cards on the secondary marketplace to level up their stack and climb the top 50. A mechanic very popular with traditional gamers as they compete for supremacy and more importantly, bragging rights. At the time of writing it is not clear if any tangible or monetary reward will be given but the expectation is building.

Lurking in the shadows

The WAX blockchain has long been the self-proclaimed ‘King of NFTs,’ having launched multiple, sold-out, brand-affiliated NFT collections such as Garbage Pail Kids, and KOGS since launching in November 2019. Furthermore, the announcement that WAX will once again be teaming up with Topps to launch the MLB affiliated Major League Baseball card collectibles on April 20th, 2021 has captured the attention of the industry.

In amongst the fervor of the recent NFT hype WAX seems to have been slightly forgotten as they continue to plug away focusing on high volume, lower-cost NFT collections that don’t command the headlines like Beeple or CryptoPunks.

The release of the Topps MLB cards will be interesting to observe. Will these digital collectibles gain anywhere near the value or attention of physical MLB cards, then WAX could have found its game-changer. All this amidst the backdrop of WAX recently celebrating the creation of 1,000,000 WAX blockchain accounts.

After a strong start to 2021 that saw Alien Worlds become the leading blockchain game within 3 months of launch, WAX appears to be heading into Q2 with all guns blazing.
