Deep within its heart of flame,

The Stone of Puyo plays a game

That no one loses, no one wins;

For one Efreet, new life begins.

Zalran Efreet

Splinter - The Burning Lands

Set - Reward

Class - Legendary Mage

Habitat - Zalran Efreet lives in a shallow cave in the Ashland foothills of the Molten Mountains. His home is extremely comfortable and well-furnished for a cave. With only one entrance, Zalran’s cave is tightly secure against those who would steal his precious Puyo Stone.

Size - Many years of intermittent fasting have made Zalran Efreet very thin. Though he still possesses great strength, Zalran often goes for over a week at a time without a meal, so he weighs very little.

Lifespan - Like many others who have embraced the powers of magical objects, Zalran Efreet’s life has been unnaturally stretched by the Puyo Stone. He is unsure of how much longer he will walk the Planet, and as he gets older, he recognizes in the mirror less and less the person he once knew himself to be.

Weapon - Zalran has a magnificent collection of staves in his home, but they are mostly ornamental. His magic attacks begin at the core with the Puyo Stone by his heart. Then they are refined and amplified through his Efreet body before they are released with precision from his skilled hands. He can also kill using the martial arts of the Ancients, but he much prefers magic.

Diet - Food is rarely a consideration for Zalran, since he spends the vast majority of his time in fast. When he eats, he enjoys food as much as anyone ever could, often traveling great distances to try new exotic foods. His favorite cuisine is the seafood of the Serpentines to the south. It is a long journey and the Serpentines are a far-from-hospitable people, but Zalran Efreet makes the trip at least once a Ferexia year.

Allies - The Torch has a peaceful relationship with Zalran Efreet, but they also keep a close eye on him, knowing a bit of what his power can do. He occasionally even does small jobs for them. Although he is not willing to go to war for the Ferexia, he is more than happy to represent them in Moxian tournament battle. Zalran is also as friendly as anyone can be with the savage Serpentines, on whom he relies for seafood delicacies.

Enemies - Zalran’s enemies as a higher class Ferexia Efreet are fairly standard. He looks down upon Humans and Ogres, he distrusts Fire Demons and he refuses to work with Goblins under any circumstances. Still, his greatest enemy has always been himself, and since his bonding with the Puyo Stone, the conflict in his soul has reached a fever pitch.

Work - Zalran Efreet comes from one of the most wealthy and powerful Efreet clans in the history of the Burning Lands. The handed-down jewels alone in his keep are worth enough to feed a small village for a decade. He does not need to work in order to survive, so why would he?

Pastimes - Zalran spends most of his time practicing his strange tricks of fire. While many of these are deadly magic attacks, the ones he enjoys the most are harmless light shows. He shoots spires of multi-colored sparks and flame into the dark, smoggy sky of the Ashlands. These can be seen for miles around. Zalran thinks he is creating these spectacles for himself alone, but watching his nightly shows has become a popular activity for Kobolds. Many of them bring their families and set up picnic blankets to watch the dazzling lights; it’s one of the only reasons they come out of the caves.

The True Story of Splinterlands

Once upon a time your game purchase meant something. You could go to the store and purchase a game, after which you would simply own that game. You could play as often as you'd like, because it was your game. As the game companies were one by one swallowed up by larger and larger game companies, a terrible thing happened to the gaming world. While the games themselves were always making improvements, the players were always throwing more and more of their hard-earned money into a corporate black hole from which they reaped no rewards.

How did the corporations convince the players to pay this money? Loot. They showered the players with in-game riches designed to create a sense of accomplishment, but with no real value. Not only are these in-game "assets" entirely subject to the whims of corporate overlords who rarely (if ever) have the player's interests at heart, but they never really belong to the player at all. They belong exclusively to the game for which they were created. If a player wants to quit playing the game,  they must also abandon their in-game treasures.

Blockchains are giving power and ownership back to the players, and it's about time. In this incredible and rapidly expanding world of technology it seems like such an outdated argument to be making, but the players (not the company) should own their gaming rewards. Blockchain, non-fungible tokens and games like Splinterlands are now making that possible.
