Splinterlands - Battle Library Three - RTFI or Read the (censored) Instructions!

Have you ever come across the abbreviation RTFI - it means in short to read the instructions - or in the case of SPLINTERLANDS make sure you check out the rules first!!

First things first, feel free to just go to their website directly but if Splinterlands interests you I'd be very happy if you joined up with my referral link:

https://splinterlands.com?ref=silver-edge In Battle Library Three I'm posting about a match where reading the rules (instructions) is very important.  Checking the rules of the match first can give you some suggestions as to what you may face and suggest which cards you should or shouldn't use!

https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sl_31752b15526c1d3d1d8088b97fa74311&ref=silver-edge The rules that applied to this battle were:

- Mana cap of 15 - I'd call this a medium to low cap - hard to fit "big" cards in! Also a good chance of not facing a full team.  Once you count the summoner you've only got 12-13 mana to work with!

- Fire, Earth, Life and Death only - No water so less chance of a Double Magic Attack Blitz...

- Rise of the commons - Common and Rare cards only (No Kron or anything nasty like that!)

 - Fog of War - No Snipe or Sneak attacks (but Opportunity could still be there)

So if you read the ruleset carefully you can see that using sneak or snipe is out.  In particular using sneak melee cards is useless.  While Life/Death and Earth have some magic characters it's rarer to see many of them as they're often higher mana and don't get an Alric type boost so there are good odds of facing Melee and Ranged.  This makes Shield, Thorns, Return Fire and Retaliate all good abilities.

And so with me bearing the above in mind here is how the battle lined up:

I went with:

Summoner - Mylor Crowling - Expecting melee as being quite prevalent I figure thorns would be very useful.

Stone Golem in first slot - For the shield ability.  He's not much of an attacker but has two armor and a solid six health.

Wood Nymph in second slot - for the heal ability.  She's also fairly safe (apart from Blast perhaps) in second slot when Snipe is not a factor.

Earth Elemental in third slot - Low mana, check, Solid Six health, check, Ranged attack, check - all what I needed at the back of the team.  Between the three attack on first slot and thorns I'd have a good chance of getting past any healing!

A couple of notes here, I covered all of the damage types here, Magic, Ranged and Melee.  If they had shield I'd still have a chance of getting through with magic, if they had void armor then I'd have a chance with the Melee and Ranged and if they had heal I had three damage plus thorns to get through the tank.

The opponent went with:

Summoner - Zintar - Death team with minus one to Melee - not a problem for me as I only had the one melee attacker who only had the minimum one damage.  Notwithstanding my choice of team, minus one to Melee is often a very strong power.

Haunted Spirit in first slot - given the death splinter this was predictable.  A solid attack with the heal ability.  With two melee attack he can hit through Stone Golems armor.

Skeleton Assassin in second slot - someone didn't pay attention to the rules.  As a melee attacker with sneak removed he is blocked and is useless until Haunted Spirit dies.

Wicked Jester in third slot - a good two ranged attacker but somewhat diminished due to the loss of his snipe ability so he is stuck hitting the tank who in this case, with shield reduces his damage to one.

So you can clearly see, reading the instructions is clearly going to be the difference between winning and losing.  My whole team can attack and has useful abilities, his does not!

Turn One - Wicked Jester and Haunted Spirit go first doing one damage each to the Stone Golem (taking out its armor).  Haunted Spirit receives two thorns damage.   Wood Nymph, Earth Elemental and Stone Golem all hit next dealing a total of three damage to Haunted Spirit.  No healing from Wood Nymph as Stone Golem has only lost armor and still has full health.  Haunted Spirit ends the turn with two health.

Turn Two - Wicked Jester and Haunted Spirit again go first doing a total of two damage to Stone Golem.  Haunted Spirit healed but this was countered by thorns after his attack so the spirit remains at two health.  Wood Nymph heals Stone Golem to full health, then hits Haunted Spirit for one allowing Earth Elemental to finish the job and kill the Haunted Spirit.  Skeleton Assassin moves to first slot but doesn't get a turn as due to his high speed he missed his turn by being blocked by Haunted Spirit.  Stone Golem does one damage to Skeleton Assassin who ends the turn with one health.  Stone Golem has his full six health.

Turn Three and Four - Skeleton Assassin goes first and hits stone golem for zero (due to shield ability) and dies to thorns.  Wicked Jester is now at the front and since he has a ranged attack can no longer attack.  My team each attack the jester and then kill him at the start of turn four.

So overall an easy win because I looked at the rules and the opponent didn't.  If there was no fog of war and this lineup was in place his jester would have killed the Wood Nymph early and the Assassin would have chipped at the Earth Elemental.  With my damage gone apart from the stone golem I would probably have lost as he would have only lost one health each turn (thorns plus stone golem less heal) whereas Jester and Assassin would have taken out my backline fast and then Stone Golem would have been taking two damage a turn with no healing only lasting three turns (after losing its armor).

And so it goes.. Read the Instructions and you'll have an advantage over those that dont!

Hope you enjoyed the battle and if you found it interesting and are not into Splinterlands yet give it a go:
