Entering the smartphone space is a difficult task, to say the least. Just ask Microsoft who spent billions acquiring and building out their attempt to break into the space. Microsoft though failed to break through and establish itself leaving the market with just two operating systems. Apple’s iOS system and Andriod which has been used by many others in different variations. Andriod though tends to have one form that everyone else follows and does not really have versions that differ too much from each other.
Over the years different start-ups and other technology veterans have tried to create a new system that really breaks free of the dichotomy that currently exists however they have all failed. Of particular interest that that several companies have tried to tap into the crypto hype these last few years by releasing phones that either features cold storage wallets or even tap into some sort of Dapp store. Unless you are really looking for a blockchain or crypto smartphone they are hard to spot and even harder to find in the US. Sirin Labs had a huge ICO in 2017 ( I was a poor soul who invested in this) and their phone while it exists never received widespread adoption. LG was another who promised one but they actually left the smartphone market overall and never released theirs.
One that if you know where to look you can find is HTC EXODUS but even it has not gained an enormous following or adoption. It has though continued to be refined and adapted to different things. Heck, it even began to be able to mine Monero (XMR) on the phone however I am not sure how exactly efficient it would be to do so. HTC though has been a struggling company for the last few years so it will be important for the company to build upon the inroads that they have established to really try and gain a foothold before the larger players start to pour money into the space.
When Solana made the phone announcement there was something else that they mentioned at the time that I think was swept away due to the phone comment. Solana is releasing a software media kit that could be worth its weight in gold.
So what is so important about this software kit?
Called the Solana Mobile Stack or SMS this kit could be something that finally allows blockchain technology to break into the mainstream phone field. Rather than try to build a phone operating system from scratch this technology, the SMS, taps into the Andriod tech that already exists! Going back to when I had a Microsoft Phone or was looking into Sirin Labs phone Finney the issue that neither of these phones was able to address was getting the popular apps onto their phones. This takes care of that and allows someone to be able to not only access their Dapps but access Snapchat at the same time!
While some security is going to be sacrificed by doing this it does allow for more and more people to find it an attractive operating platform. A newbie to crypto or someone who is expanding their usage and presence in the space could choose a phone with this type of operating system and then always have the typical functionality he or she would be used to. By also creating this other phone manufacturers like Samsung, LG, Nokia, etc. could tap this technology and utilize it to further break into the space and be a first mover.
This means that the phone that Solana Labs is developing while important due to the investment being made in it could end up being a sidekick to other phones utilizing this operating system. It will allow the team to be able to get moving on critical development that could be used to help draw more people to the Solana Blockchain! Solana will need to continue to work on its outage issue though as it would not be possible for the phone to fully work with a blockchain that suffers from staying online. If this issue is fixed and the blockchain continues to grow this could be a huge hit for Solana as it looks to overtake Ethereum.
