Survival: Gaining and Maintaining Traction

Thanks for checking out the second part of this article on etiquette on #Torum and in #SocialFi space in general. In part one, we broke down the basic reasoning behind making first contact with other Landers on planet #Torum, now let’s get to the crux of the matter. What is the most salient reason why #NewLanders are prone to misdemeanours? Money.

Yes. The time has come to address the elephant in the room: Don’t come to #Torum to leech XTM. This is the hardest part for beginners to understand about #Torum. I get it, this sounds really counterintuitive, when earning crypto for and by using social media seems to be a central pillar holding up SocialFi. Maybe the following formatting better conveys the weighting of significance within this portmanteau: “fi” or “

Just this week, #Torrum crossed the threshold of 200,000 users (Landers), I am honoured to have been there to witness it and it will no doubt be fun to look back in a couple of years, when there are another three zeros behind this crucial milestone! But Landers, remember, even though you are welcome to earn on #Torum, money is not at all the primary purpose of the platform.

#Torum is not a mine or a cash-cow. No one needs Landers who show up for 10 minutes per day to drop a few hurried emojis, links and random likes just to fulfil their daily quota and bugger off again. Back in August, Andre Cronje of Yearn Finance coined a beautiful phrase: “Liquidity Locusts”. Projects build incredible worlds, investing copious amounts of time and effort, only to have ungrateful “Liquidity Locusts” descend on their baby and deplete it to the bone and move on to the next project. Don’t come to #Torum with the mindset to get some quick money and then set off in search of the next opportunity to parasite upon. Come as a friend, a —NOT a miner or troll.

Remember that party I described? Don’t forget that every person on #Torum, is a real person, with feelings, hopes, dreams and goals in life—just like you. Be as kind, patient and tolerant, as you would in IRL, if not more so. It is easy to troll others with relative impunity, hiding behind a keyboard, but there is no honour in it. Don’t start fights and think twice before criticising. There is nothing wrong with disagreeing with someone, you are, of course, entitled to your own opinion, just don’t make it ugly. Be tactful and never type anything you would not have the guts to say to the person’s face. Remember that words typed are void of other non-cues, which we mostly take for granted in our daily lives, but all use subconsciously, to clearly indicate to the listener our intent, e.g., that we are not seeking a confrontation (tone of voice, facial expressions, body language, etc.) Thus, the written word is far easier to misinterpret than the spoken word, ergo: be MORE, not less tactful than you would be in a face-to-face interaction. If you make a mistake, diffuse the situation and own it—apologise. This is a sign of wisdom and strength, NOT weakness.

Here is a list of other admonitions, suggestions and best practices, albeit, at a slightly higher tempo:

Strive to have and not be shy to express an interest in multiple subjects. Yes, Crypto and Blockchain are King and Queen, but they need a court of nobles. If the only thing you are interested is art and ignore all other discussions, it stands to reason that people will only approach you to sound you off on art-related ideas. You may find it a bit lonely, if your mind is a one-way freight train. Diversify and give other interests a chance, it will only make you more interesting to others. In moderation, as I said earlier. Find a balance.

In other words, the choice is yours, if you wish to treat #Torum like a platform to promote yourself as an expert, rather than make friends. By all means, go for it, you will, likely, derive business and be used by Landers as a soundboard on the One subject you care and know about, but don’t expect too many genuine relationships to form, as you hide all other aspects of your character and friendship is a two-way street.

Do not hijack the posts of others. If you repost, preface your comments with a message like “Please comment on @xyz’s OP.” This way your followers immediately understand that this is not an original initiative and know that they should engage with and spread the original post of the author of the idea.

Do try to read and leave a meaningful reply to every comment. I, for one, confess that I often write long comments. This just shows my respect to the person posting, as I took the time to analyse their idea and leave a thoughtful remark. I do not expect you to match me in word-count, but I do need to feel some warmth from your words, that you appreciate my input. Just a like and a lazy one-word-answer like “thanks” or “nice” or emoji is just code for “ignore all my future posts”. This is not a message you wish to send to those who take time out of their day to engage with you.

Don’t look for minimum-effort shortcuts, don’t try to be sly and game the system. People resonate with sincere goodwill and can smell a self-serving rat from miles away.

Don’t post generic, 1-sentence discussions or polls fishing for answers and engagement from others, e.g., things along the lines of: “Hey, #TorumFam! Bitcoin or Ethereum?” No one wishes to be your mule for the heavy lifting of content creation. Write meaningful posts that inspire people to share their opinions and engage with you. Remember, you get what you give!

Try not to constantly invite people off the platform. I believe that it is perfectly fine to have your website or shop link in your bio or occasionally post about your blog. That’s why I am proposing to #TeamTorum to create these functionalities in-house (i.e. allow Landers to publish articles and sell the NFTs THEY create right on planet #Torum). However, don’t expect much engagement, if you make zero effort to educate, entertain or assist the community and just shill, shill, shill whatever’s important to you all day long, using #Torum just as a gateway.

No need to use bitly or other sites to shorten links (referral links included), this way people know what they’re clicking on. In these days of scammy sites, it is important not to hide sources and origins, so that people can easily execute their DYOR-protocol. On Twitter this was necessary due to the awful character limiter (which even they were forced to bump up from the initial ridiculous 140 characters and people STILL are forced to spin ‘threads’ to say something meaningful). This is unnecessary on #Torum (one of my favourite features), as you can post long posts without issue.

Thou shalt halt thy wicked tongue! Use extreme words extremely sparingly. While colourful language often, initially, has the desired effect of shock-value and garnering attention, when overused, it loses its colour and has the opposite effect—it just comes off as crass and people might write you off, as an uncouth oaf. Again, see the point about the written word. Remember, you are not in the same room or even on the phone with the listener, people can easily misinterpret your TOV. What you may think sounds funny, or cool, might just sound banal or even plain stupid to others. So beware! :)

If you must utilise coarse language, do it with class and pizzazz, here’s how a gentleman with the brain that’s the size of a small planet swears, Charles sure does have a way with words… :) Did you feel how seismic that f-bomb was? How it elegantly hammered his point home? Why? Because it was the first and only one dropped and snuck up on our unguarded psyche like a tiger. We can all learn from this. Language is a powerful tool. Respect it. Use it wisely.

Be smarter, not louder.

Are you an NFT investor? Sick of bankster tyranny and political corruption? Welcome to the club! We are building a Decentralised Autonomous Organisation (DAO) to confront and stand up to the evil that banks do, by spreading information about the golden age of crypto, as well as bankster-busting art. In the future, we will launch awareness campaigns, as well as develop screenplays and games to foment a groundswell of self-custody of wealth and aspiration toward true financial freedom. The Crypto Crypts collection is the genesis collection released under the Animusian Artists’ Collective brand and every Halloween we will expand the collection with a new drop, as well as release rare art and support throughout the year. The AAC stands for helping to launch promising artists’ careers and to support animal rescue. Over 90% of the proceeds from the Crypto Crypts collection will be sent to charity, reinvested into the community or the DAO treasury.
