PRESS RELEASE. Prior to this moment, we have only seen what Davis has conjured from pure code and imagination. On this occasion, we will also be able to see the human touch of Davis’ hand in his artwork with an exhibition presented by SEASONS LA and LGND. It’s the first time collectors will have the chance to obtain something totally unique that is rooted in both the physical and the virtual worlds.

Joshua Davis, otherwise known as Praystation, is an artist, designer, technologist and author in algorithmic image making & animation and is acclaimed for his role in designing the visualisation of IBM’s Watson. Davis was the winner of the 2001 Prix Ars Electronica Golden Nica. His work has been exhibited at the Tate Modern, the Design Museum London, le Centre Pompidou, the ICA London, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, MoMA PS1 New York, the Whitney, the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum and more.

The V01D is an entirely custom, written from scratch, art code-base consisting of 9825 lines of code that Davis has developed over the past 6 years. An algorithmic software specifically to make art ad infinitum, not limited to a fixed timeline of animation or length. The program can produce works akin to a snowflake, where no two visual compositions would ever be the same. To put it simply, Davis uses code to program all the rules where an artist would typically make decisions. Allowing the software/algorithm to become an independent artist in itself. Davis is in a constant state of active dialog with the computation. Davis has effectively created an art orchestra in which he is the ultimate maestro.

Art works by Joshua Davis on display at The Showroom LA

These digital works are accompanied by a still rendering, archival printed on canvas, with a hand-painted geometrical pattern. The imperfections of the hand-drawn pattern in silver ink represent an intentional contrast to the perfect precision performed by the mathematical algorithm.

The opening reception is at Seasons LA: The Showroom in Los Angeles on Wednesday, February 16, from 6 – 9 pm. The Showroom is a first-of-its-kind intimate, immersive, multimedia live performance space in the South Park neighborhood of downtown Los Angeles and features over 500 square feet of ultra-high-resolution LED display panels. The Showroom can host private, by-invitation-only events and shows for up to 300 guests.

The exhibition brought to you by SEASONS LA and LGND will run Thursday February 17 through to Sunday February 20, 12 – 6 pm at The Showroom 1036 S. Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, 90015. For show attendance to view the pieces please contact [email protected].
