It is safe to say that for Reddit the last month has been one to forget. Instead of changing course and working with developers, Reddit has continued to take the hardline stance with its API data continuing to drive a wedge between the company and its users. This latest 4-week cycle included the blackout/protest that had the subreddit down for 48 hours like so many others.
I wasn't sure how this was going to affect the distribution and once the protest was over something interesting started to happen that further caused me to wonder what kind of distribution ratio we were going to get. The online user numbers had roughly doubled from what they would typically be 24/7. Before the blackout, the subreddit at certain hours would hit ~4k online whereas now it is pretty hard to find it under 8k at any given time. During the few times that I have seen it below the 8k mark, it has been in the 7k range up considerably from what it previously was. From asking around no one seem to know what the reason for this increase is as even if it was just bot accounts people agree that we really are not seeing the type of activity we would expect from bots so it could be due to people having to use the Reddit app now instead of the third-party apps.
It would make sense to say that the blackout would increase the ratio however the number of online users would give the appearance of doing the exact opposite. When you also weigh in the pretty big crypto news with BlackRock and BINANCE I thought that the days of the 0.7+ ratio were going to take a break since it just seemed that popularity was increasing once more. You could have knocked me over with a feather then when I checked the data after the snapshot today.
THE RATIO HAD INCREASED TO 1.1 MEANING THAT FOR EVERY 10 KARMA YOU GET 11 MOONS!
A ratio like this has not appeared in a while with a ton of us who love to accumulate our MOONS ecstatic that it has been in the 0.7-0.9 range as it is! This month I was rather streaky to do work and travel so I would go 4-5 days between posts and comments so when I saw that the 599 Karma I had earned put me right outside the top 5% of Karma earners this month was even more surprising. That is before any governance polls as well which would mean a 5% boost for voting in the first poll followed by 1.25% boosts for every other poll after the first. At a minimum earning 658.9 MOONs over a 4-week period is fantastic as MOONs are currently trading at $0.10 a piece meaning a solid $65.89 if I just sold off the whole month's worth!
I expect to see the ratio return to the previous range of 0.7-0.9 as it has been for months but anything could happen. One thing I would say is that a high ratio while great for users in the short term is not the best thing in the long run. Long term it would give the sense that the group is not as active and would result in MOONs facing more selling pressure than they typically do.
