Popular French football giant Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) is joining a long list of traditional entities looking into the metaverse. On March 16, the football club filed a trademark application that covers non-fungible tokens (NFTs), cryptocurrency transactions, electronics, sports gear, virtual clothing, and crypto wallets.

Earlier today, metaverse trademark attorney Michael Kondoudis shared a tweet highlighting the development. The tweet contained some specifics of the application and included a serial number and the filing date. In a separate press release, Kondoudis said:

“Paris Saint-Germain is one of the world’s best-known football clubs, and the value attached to the team’s name and brand is substantial. This filing represents the next logical step to protect the brand as it moves into the Metaverse.”

The lawyer also added that PSG has recognized the metaverse industry’s potential and is looking to dominate it. He then suggested that the next twelve months will see several brands file for related trademarks.

In February, English football club Manchester City began constructing the first-ever metaverse football stadium. Manchester City is teaming up with electronics giant Sony to provide technical advice and hardware required for the initiative. The football club’s metaverse will be a replica of its Etihad Stadium so that its community can enjoy the same view.
