MetaMask Releases Snaps: One Wallet for All Chains?!

This week, METAMASK announced the beta release of their Snap feature. Snaps allow external developers to build apps on top of MetaMask's functionality, similar to the App Store or Microsoft's Windows. Snaps are JavaScript files that can be installed by users to increase the functionality of MetaMask. Some potential snaps already being showcased include StarkNet for contract accounts on L2, wallets for alternative layer ones like Bitcoin, Litecoin, Thorchain, etc., Web3Auth to turn MetaMask into an MPC wallet, ZK-Nullifier to create pseudonymous apps, smart accounts to access smart contract wallets directly from MetaMask, and more. Snaps is an exciting development from the MetaMask team as it allows them to scale their wallet and increase its functionality in a way that is not possible with a closed development loop.

With the rollout of MetaMask Extension v11.0, available presently on Chrome and with an impending launch on Firefox, Snaps have been ushered into the mainstream. For enthusiasts eager to integrate Snaps into their MetaMask experience, the process is straightforward. Simply visit the MetaMask Snaps Directory, and from there, users can directly integrate any of the 30+ Snaps available. Such a diverse repository might raise concerns about security and authenticity. However, every Snap in this directory has undergone meticulous scrutiny, not just by MetaMask's dedicated team but also by third-party experts.

The decision to curate a list of approved Snaps – often referred to as an "allowlist" – is not an arbitrary one. While MetaMask champions innovation, they also prioritize user safety. Thus, this allowlist serves as a preliminary measure, ensuring the utmost security for users. Meanwhile, MetaMask continues to explore ways to seamlessly introduce a more open, permissionless model, which, though ambitious, requires careful planning and execution.

For cryptocurrency investors and users, this development underscores the dynamic nature of the industry. As tools like MetaMask evolve, so too does the broader landscape of digital finance. Stay informed, and more importantly, stay adaptable. As the digital realm continues its relentless march forward, innovations like Snaps ensure that users remain not just spectators, but active participants.
