“Mother of Creation” by Madonna and Beeple sold out

The “Mother of Creation” set of NFTs was sold through a SuperRare auction this weekend. The pieces attracted a lot of attention and generated over 300 ETH in primary sales. To learn more about the collection and see the designs of the NFTs, check out this detailed overview

Each of the three pieces in the collection attracted numerous bids during the auction. “Mother of Nature” ranks as the most sought-after with a winning bid of over 170 ETH, or about $346,000.

The collaborative project was in the works for over a year, and now both Madonna and Beeple enjoy heaps of attention from the NFT community. While some find the project very bold and provocative, others have critiques to share.

Fans appreciate the bold concept, critics find design flaws

Since May 10th, the NFT space has been buzzing with excitement and comments regarding Madonna and Beeple’s controversial artworks. Some NFT enthusiasts, like thecatdaddy.eth and Promblem Identifier find the artwork poignant and a success for both collaborators.

Problem Identifier also points out that while humans age, art is immortal and a creator can express themselves in numerous ways, despite being famous in a specific area. The fan calls Madonna immortal and her “Mother fo Creation” NFTs magnificent.

Others, however, find it hard to appreciate the works. According to Twitter user Mafeo, the idea behind the project is nice, but the visual execution could have been a lot better. They compare the design to games made for Playstation 2 more than 20 years ago.

Of course, controversial artworks have always been polarizing, so it is not surprising to see opinions on both sides of the spectrum. The appreciation of the community is one of the most important factors in the NFT space, and it looks like Madonna and Beeple have managed to catch everyone’s attention. The collection sold out, completing its ultimate goal to raise money for several charities. However, artists are looking into a deeper purpose behind such high-profile releases. Check out what digital artists Reva and Ting Song have to say about Beeple and Madonna’s collaborative project.

NFT art should bring new perspectives

Digital art has been around for a long time, but NFTs have managed to reinvigorate it and breathe new life into this medium. Unfortunately, as algorithmic artist Reva points out, it might not be enough to simply issue tokens for your digital works and call them NFT art.

“I don’t think it’s enough to just use NFTs as a content medium right now. (If just using it as a medium) it feels like an awkward transplant. Crypto artists should be artists who can capture this web3 wave and the social meaning hidden behind it, and then express it shockingly through artworks.”

According to her, Madonna and Beeple’s collaborative project could have done more to capture that web3 spirit in its modeling and design. This is one of the more widespread criticisms of the work – it just does not do enough in terms of innovation when it comes to the design.

“The problem is that I don’t see any craftsman spirit here, both in terms of message conveying or purely visual. The 3D modeling is just not that great.”

Ting Song, another crypto artist and founder of the Ting Museum, points out that Beeple’s male perspective might have taken something away from the original idea. According to her, the “Mother of Creation” triptych could have done better in terms of highlighting the “female creator”.

“I watched it a few times. In fact, I personally feel that the visual expression of this work may not be so ‘feminine’. Instead, it feels more like a tech-world male point of view to some extent.

Reimagining technology from the perspective of women as a mother is creative. I’m looking forward to seeing more original and BRAVE expressions of women emerging from the crypto art world.”
