Leading French premium foods organization Labeyrie and Italy’s Gruppo Grigi have decided to join hands with IBM Food Trust for the purpose of blockchain traceability, claims IBM today. Labeyrie seeks to use the vital platform for monitoring its Norwegian smoked salmon products beginning from today, while Gruppo Griggi is planning to introduce traceability for its renowned Aliveris pasta brand sometimes later in the year 2019.

Labeyrie aims to use the technology for the origin of its salmon stocks obtained from farmer Cermaq. This will enable buyers to scan the QR code displayed on the packaging to fetch key details like the source, species, farming situations, cutting stages, and, finally, the smoking process.

Celine Porterie, Fish Purchasing Director at Labeyrie Fine Foods Group, said,

Product traceability is an essential component of our mission to provide complete transparency to consumers about the premium quality of our smoked salmon and the requirements we meet in its preparation.

The company claims that all its products have been certified by MSC, and Salmon has obtained certification from Qualite France. The company has decided to bring all the smoked salmon products under IBM’s blockchain platform.

Earlier, many companies became part of the platform that may include Raw Seafood. Seafood traceability emerged a highly famous use case for the platform and food traceability in general. The reason why seafood traceability became popular is because of consumers’ apprehension about maintainable fish farming, use of chemicals to boost growth, and to mislabel the source of few fishes.

As far as Gruppo Grigi is concerned, the blockchain will verify that its Aliveris pasta is manufactured from organic Italian wheat and non-GMO products. The Italian group seeks to launch more products from its portfolio onto the blockchain.
