Cardano successfully executed its "Alonzo" hard fork combinator Sunday evening, ushering smart contracts and decentralized app capabilities onto the coin's ecosystem.

The IOHK (Input Output Hong Kong) leadership live-streamed the transition on YouTube and provided commentary.

"This has been the most difficult part of my career...and probably the most meaningful," said Charles Hoskinson, Cardano founder and CEO of IOHK.

Hoskinson and a rotating cast from IOHK touched on a wide variety of topics ranging from the Cardano dapp (decentralized application) ecosystem to the work that remains to be done.

Shruti Appiah, IOHK's engineering product manager, said there are over 100 dapps currently in the process of development on the Cardano network. Appiah said Cardano's emerging dapp ecosystem will be supported by Cardano's core development team to ensure success.

Hoskinson listed several projects he envisions will take root on Cardano's network now that the Alonzo hard fork combinator completed.

"This time next year [we'll see] microfinance, micro insurance, etc" Hoskinson said.

The live stream mixed technical updates with celebratory comments and activities. Hoskinson wore a Ghostbusters costume, brought out his Cardano Octopus, and toasted the team and Cardano community with a glass of scotch.

The Cardano network's Alonzo hard fork combinator launched on Epoch 290. Cardano's ADA cryptocurrency traded just under $2.60 on COINBASE Pro at time of press.
