It sure is. If not, my presence here wouldn't be needed.
But how do cryptocurrencies and football combine?
Well, apart from the (still) shy attempts to actually put football in a blockchain (like the inactive project GOAL Bonanza or the promising Rabona.io manager simulator), there are some interesting approaches to this question:
English Premier League club Watford FC started a campaign in support of Bitcoin adoption and spread, that not only includes the instantly recognizable logo in the sleeve of the official shirts but features a range of initiatives available through a subdomain from their website.
Other clubs, like Portuguese giants Benfica, are accepting cryptocurrencies -Bitcoin and Ethereum- for match tickets and club merchandising. Italian behemoth Juventus went a step further by creating their own coin, the Fan Token, to provide the fan base with easy voting and establish a closer relationship. FC Barcelona joined the platform offering their own token for 2€ each last summer and one of the candidates to the presidency of the club, Toni Freixa, promised a lucrative sponsorship contract (more than seventy million dollars) with DSDAQ, a Hong Kong based cryptocurrency exchange.
Some private initiatives, like the CoinMarketCap sponsorship deal with Beitar Jerusalem pictured above, or the recent agreement between Turkish side Besiktas JK and the local exchange Icrypex, paid entirely in Bitcoin -as was the seven Premier League teams and eToro deal-, proof that there is indeed a market and a natural relationship between football and crypto.
And this is just the beginning, these are still baby steps in what seems to be a long, fruitful journey. Some clubs are getting their sponsorship money based on the performance of the team, and there is much more to come. The possibilities are infinite but I will try to keep track and bring you everything related to football and crypto.
