Now about Ethereum 2.0

Eth2 is the next generation of Ethereum. It’s a multi-year plan to improve the scalability, security and programmability of Ethereum, without compromising on decentralization. In contrast to the Ethereum chain, as it currently stands, eth2 uses proof-of-stake (PoS) to secure its network.

And while Ethereum as you know and love it will continue to exist as its own independent proof-of-work chain for a little while to come, the transition towards PoS starts now.In order to make this transition possible, eth2 requires active participants – known as validators. Validators are responsible for securing the network and receive continuous payouts for actions that help the network reach consensus. This Launch Pad takes you through how to become one.

About 8,092,278 ETH are staked today, this is about 27,35B $, when ETH is 3380,02

Rewards for staking.

How does Eth2 upgrade Ethereum?

Eth2 is a set of upgrades that will make Ethereum more scalable, secure, and sustainable. These upgrades will improve Ethereum while seamlessly continuing on the chain of today. Here's more on the different upgrades:

Proof-of-stake (PoS) and the Beacon Chain

PoS is a more secure, decentralized, and environmentally-friendly consensus mechanism than the proof-of-work (PoW) that secures Ethereum today. It rewards validators for building the chain, but slashes their deposits if they try to attack it, incentivising healthy behaviour. This upgrade is already live in the form of the Beacon Chain.

The Merge (docking)

The merge, also known as the docking, will see the Ethereum mainnet we use today merge with the Beacon Chain. This is when Ethereum will fully transition to proof-of-stake.

Sharding

Sharding will make more data available to the network by introducing 64 parallel chains. Each new chain will be able to handle at least as much data as mainnet today, probably more.
