How to beat Topaz in Axie Infinity: Origins - Season 4 Mystic Era (13 June 2023)

Topaz is the archetype to beat in the Mystic Era of Season 4 in Axie Infinity: Origins with about 50% usage at the Top 200 and about 40% usage at the Top 1000. The fact that it is “only” 50% means there is still hope. This post is for those who are fed up with facing Topaz (including myself) and want to find a way to beat them! Here is the data I collected (on 13 June 2023) for the past 3 days for matches against Topaz.

  • Play Sustain if you just want to beat Topaz and do not mind losing other matchups
  • Jinx and maybe Perch can do okay against Topaz
  • Gloomy Dice and Flamingo Hammer seem to be good against Topaz
  • Blue Moon and Babylonia are good in Topaz mirror

Archetypes against Topaz

Win Rates of Archetypes against Topaz

If you want to beat Topaz, the best option is to play Sustain. Sustain has an amazing win rate of 66% against Topaz at Top 100 and Top 200. If you have a good Sustain team, you can go and farm the Topaz players if you do not mind certain matchups that is close to impossible for Sustain to win.

The next best option is Jinx. Jinx has a very slight edge against Topaz but it all depends on the draw and discards. Obviously having the optimal Parts, Runes, and Charms would help your win rate (especially the Mystic Charms that add Jinx / Goo cards into opponent’s discard pile as well as Mantis Dagger for extra discard).

If you cannot beat them, join them. That is pretty much the third best option.

If you are bored with playing Sustain, Jinx, and Topaz, maybe you can try Perch! It is not a popular archetype at the moment, which could work to your advantage as some players do not quite know how to play against Perch yet.

Classes against Topaz

Win Rates of Classes against Topaz

There is really no particular class that is good against Topaz. Just don’t play Bird because the Mystic Runes for Bird is really not that good. Similar for Plants. Leafy Plants do not have a good matchup against Topaz.

Runes against Topaz

Win Rates of Runes against Topaz

Given how good Sustain is against Topaz, it is not surprising to see Shellshock and Adaptive Program being all the way up there. I am surprised that Shield Backup is not all the way up there as well but it still has pretty good win rate of 58% against Topaz at Top 100.

It is interesting to see Pure Skill (the Rare Rune that buffs ally’s Shields and Heals by 10%) all the way up there as a budget version of Holy Prayer.

Gloomy Dice seems to be doing pretty well against Topaz, perhaps because Topaz has to play some many cards early game, and if the Gloomy Dice high rolls, it could give Topaz some trouble in terms of card draw.

Charms against Topaz

Win Rates of Charms agains Topaz

This is no surprise that the Endurance Charms (+ Shield Stats) are at the Top given how Sustain relies on the Endurance Charms to ramp with Adaptive Program. Energy Drink M and Energy Drink S can also be popular in Sustain to ensure thay have a lot of Shield to survive early game as well as removing the cards from the deck for more consistent draw late game.

The other set of Charms that are good against Topaz is the Jinx package with Flamingo Hammer doing surprisingly well as putting Weak potentially on multiple Axies with Doubletalk is a pretty good way to slow down that damage from Topaz. Lazy Snail and Paralyzing JellyFish are also good to add more Curse cards into opponent’s deck as Topaz’s deck can be so thin after the first rotation.

Parts against Topaz

Win Rates of Parts against Topaz

The Sustain package with Tassels, Twin Tail, Indian Star etc. does very well against Topaz. Tricky is also there for Sustain team to get an extra copy of Innocent Lamb which often turns into another Twin Tail.

The only two non-Sustain parts that are worth mentioning are Blue Moon and Babylonia. Topaz teams with these two cards seem to have an advantage with Blue Moon getting one extra Draw and Babylonia for the Vulnerable as it is the only non-eye / non-tail part that can apply Vulnerable.

I totally understand the frustration in facing multiple Topaz teams in a row as I literally started my day fighting against 4 Topaz teams in my first 4 games. I hope this information can help you gain an edge against Topaz teams. Even if you are a Topaz players, there are certain things that can give you an advantage, e.g. having Babylonia and Blue Moon. Good luck and have fun playing against Topaz!
