I was definitely not expecting to be talking about this today but... here we are. It seems that a prominent leaker, Tom Henderson, claimed in a tweet today that there would be missions that would reward players with cryptocurrency. Here's the tweet:
As he mentions... this really would be huge for Crypto as both getting more gamers interested in Crypto and possibly somewhat educating them on the matter would drastically increase the inflow of new people and therefore more buyers, traders, investors (even if they invest in Dogecoin ??).
Just to make it clear as a lot of people didn't understand in all the posts I've seen - It is not a real world cryptocurrency, it will be like in game cash and similar currencies just this time around players will have Cryptocurrencies there as they are integrated irl and now in games.
There is another thing to talk about with this tho... he mentions in a continuation tweet that the Crypto would almost certainly not be called "Bitcoin" if it is implemented but that it would be a cryptocurrency. He also mentions that these would be rewards from "higher-up missions givers that require untraceable and fast cash", so in essence high tier criminal bosses, this brings with it the entire idea that Crypto will and can be used for money laundering, tax evasion and other illegal and anonymous actions. This is undeniably so, as it in some cases truly can be used in that way, however it is often overstated as to how much this is actually done and how many options these people even have to be "untraceable", cause it is really difficult and the vast majority of it's use cases are investors and people that want to actually use it as an actual payment method or support the cause of the cryptocurrency in question... One could say "bad press is still press" and they would be right in a sense cause it is undeniable that this would help the crypto space out unimaginably even if people connect it more with illegal stuff, so I can not argue with that.
I'm really glad they are doing this tho if it ends up being true, despite it not being a real world crypto-currency (tho I can imagine someone will try to make it into one), it is 1 step closer to actual integration of crypto into video games and as a video game designer and crypto enthusiast that is really exciting!
