FedEx and Microsoft announced a new multiyear collaboration to transform commerce by bringing together global digital and logistics networks with the intelligent cloud.

Through a post on its official webpage, FedEx Corporation (NYSE: FDX), an American multinational delivery service company, announced a new multiyear collaboration with Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) to help transform commerce by combining the global digital and logistics network of FedEx and the robust Microsoft’s intelligent cloud.

It is a great opportunity for their customers as there will be more opportunities through multiple joint offerings powered by Azure and Dynamics 365.

“FedEx has been reimagining the supply chain since our first day of operation, and we are taking it to a new level with today’s announcement,” said Frederick W. Smith, Chairman and CEO FedEx.

“Together with Microsoft, we will combine the intense power of technology with the vast scale of our infrastructure to help revolutionize commerce and create a network for what’s next for our customers,” added he.

The new partnership between the two entities comes just a few months after the shipping giant, FedEx, canceled its partnership with Microsoft’s rival Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ: AMZN). It will be a wake-up call to Amazon, which has largely dominated northern America’s e-commerce market, to offer better services or risk losing customers to the rivals.

With the increased level of competition, the customers who depend on the shipping companies to deliver essential goods will benefit from better services. Coincidentally, the partnership has taken place a time when people are staying indoors due to the coronavirus outbreak, and door-step deliveries are becoming like the new norm.

Overview of FedEx and Microsoft New Partnership

FedEx has a network link of more than 99% of the world’s gross domestic product across 220 countries and territories. On the other hand, Microsoft Azure is trusted by more than 95% of Fortune 500 companies.

Combining the two profound talents will enable the companies to have an unprecedented level of control and insight into the global movement of goods.

“Now more than ever, organizations are counting on an efficient and capable supply chain to remain competitive and open for business,” said Satya Nadella, CEO Microsoft. “Together with FedEx, we will apply the power of Azure, Dynamics 365 and their AI capabilities to this urgent need, building new commerce experiences that transform logistics for our mutual customers around the world.”

As a result of the new collaboration, the team announced FedEx Surround, which allows any business to enhance visibility into the supply chain. The new service will be leveraging data to provide near-real-time analytics into shipment tracking. As a result, it will drive more precise logistics and inventory management.

However, more information about FedEx Surround will be shared as from this summer, whereby customer access will be rolled out in the subsequent months.
