It's here, it's there, it's everywhere. And now, for eBay sellers, AI is offering a time-saving solution for writing item descriptions. Yes, no longer do you have to describe that old piano key necktie you're looking to unload, just have a bot do the hard work for you!
On a serious note, I have tested this feature myself and find it to actually take just as much time as writing your own description. It seems to follow a simple formula that goes something like this: "___________ is perfect for all fans of ___________. Get your hands on this limited edition collectible, which also makes a perfect gift!" It certainly helped me get started writing a description, but the time I spent editing the text that was generated may well have just been spent writing the description myself.
Obviously, still being a new feature, there are some kinks to work out with the AI description writer assistant. What it cannot do is list imperfections of a particular item. I think it would be quite difficult for an AI to master describing unique items too, such as an autographed baseball or a vinyl record. There is a long way to go for AI, especially in this application.
For now, I think it's best that sellers stick to writing their own descriptions. AI in this case is meant to automate and save time, but it's simply not there yet. Always double-check whatever description is generated. You wouldn't want to get hit with an "item not as described" case, due to an unreviewed description written by artificial intelligence.
