Decentraland (MANA), a virtual reality platform controlled by its users, officially opened its doors to the public on Thursday.
According to the announcement, the final implementation of Decentraland brings together a number of features central to the long-term growth of the virtual world. These include a software development kit (SDK) that allows builders to create interactive 3D landscapes, a drag-and-drop builder that doesn’t require any coding and a marketplace that facilitates the trading of LAND and other non-fungible assets.
Additionally, Decentraland has officially launched its DAO, fully decentralizing the platform’s infrastructure.
“From now on, no single agent will have the power to modify the rules of the software, curate LAND content, modify the economics of MANA, upgrade the LAND smart contract unilaterally, or prevent others from accessing the world, among other decentralization features,” the Decentraland team previously stated.
To lay out the foundations for a fully decentralized world, we’re announcing the transfer of 222M MANA to the newly formed Decentraland Foundation; 222M to the DAO; and the burning of 333M MANA as a means to reduce the concentration of power.

With the launch, Decentraland has kicked-off a four-day, in-game treasure hunt that features the following prizes worth around $100,000:
- 1,250,000 MANA tokens
- 596,419 ANJ tokens
- 144,935 MATIC tokens
- 25 LAND parcels
- 5,011 CryptoKitties (including exclusive limited-edition cats)
- 30 Axies from Axie Infinity
- 1 HTC EXODUS 1
- Thousands of Decentraland Wearables of different rarities
This is a big day for blockchain gaming and the NFT industry. It will be interesting to see how the launch impacts investor interest in virtual land, which had been gaining momentum over the past few weeks.
