Copycat Copyright

I see tons of NFTs everyday that are direct rip offs from copyrighted material. Large franchises like Star Wars, Disney, Marvel, etc. their intellectual property is being ripped off all the time. If you’re just creating a meme, or throwing something up on Instagram just for fun, nobody is really going to bother you. Why spend money on a lawyer and drag someone into court if there is no money to be made? NFTs are a much different story… lots of money is being made from copyrighted material. So as a NFT creator (you might take note here, I said creator not artist) you’re thinking nobody really knows who I am, so NBD.  As a buyer I would stay away from anything that even hints of a copyright violation, it could come back a bite you. My guess is that it won’t take long for the big franchises to put pressure on the NFT marketplaces to monitor the content for copyright violations. There can be some gray areas in copyright law but expect the big money to win those battles. So, if you’re going to create NFTs do something original, if you can’t come up with anything original or interesting, find something else to do with your time.
