Blockchain And Privacy? Tornado Cash

In the cryptocurrency world there are solutions that guarantee anonymity. I am talking about Monero, Zcash and Dash. However, there are also special services such as mixers. The most famous mixer is Tornado Cash, which is a privacy solution on Ethereum, BINANCE Smart Chain, Avalanche, Polygon, Gnosis (xDai), Arbitrum and Optimism. Tornado Cash uses a smart contract that accepts deposits for ETH (and some EVM blockchains). Whenever assets are withdrawn to a new address, there is no way to link the withdrawal to the deposit, ensuring privacy.

Tornado Cash uses Zero-Knowledge Proof (zk-SNARK) to ensure privacy. When a user decides to make a withdrawal, the user must provide proof of having a hash called "secret" corresponding to one of the deposits listed. The zk-SNARK technology makes it possible to verify that the user is entitled to a withdrawal but without revealing which exact deposit is his. The smart contract then verifies the secrecy and transfers the deposited funds to the address specified in the withdrawal transaction. No external observer is able to determine the original address of the warehouse.

Basically Tornado Cash receives the ETH deposited on it, combines deposits and transactions by generating a "secret" with an associated hash (called "commit"), then sent to the smart contract. He then distributes the token to different addresses at checkout (the user will provide proof of ownership of one of those hashes and will receive his token quantity).

Essentially, Tornado Cash acts as a proxy to create anonymity, mixing deposits and withdrawals so they can't be linked. You can use a wallet like METAMASK with a new address that also contains some ETH (or BNB or Avax, etc depending on the network you are using).

You can use Tornado Cash Relayer in conjunction with a new Ethereum address. Using a new withdrawal address means there is no way to link the withdrawal to a particular deposit. So there are no more leads to follow that lead back to any address that could be connected to you.

All of this is necessary because your ISP will have access to your IP address at every switch between the browser and the target server. This makes all information transferred along this path public. Your provider is able to not only log your IP address, but also the timestamps of all data packets sent to Relayer. This information should be sufficient to create a connection between your wallet and the Tornado Cash withdrawal timestamps. That's why it's also vital to use a VPN (which encrypts all traffic) to obfuscate your IP address, especially when making withdrawals.

At this point all you have to do is connect to Tornado Cash and decide which token to send. You can deposit ETH or another Erc20 token. Decide the amount, click on "Deposit", confirm the transaction and wait at least 1 day. Then perform the withdrawal, thanks to the "secret".
