The answers aren't as simple as the questions. AlienWorlds is a monetized game where players acquire tools to mine a resource called Trillium on different planets and have a chance at being rewarded with an NFT.
There are multiple planets to mine on. Each planet is broken up into sectors that have different mining values attributed to them. These sectors; or lands, are NFTs that are owned by other players and are available to mine on for a commission set by the owner.

Player 1 owns land on the Planet Kavain located at coordinates 32:2. He sets a commission rate of 1.7% meaning other players like player 2 and player 3 can mine on that land and 1.7% of what they mine goes to the land owner as commission.
What are players mining? Trillium and the chance to be rewarded with an NFT. Trillium is a crypto currency that is traded on the largest crypto exchange in the world, Binance. Which means that players can mine trillium and then trade that trillium on BINANCE for whatever crypto currency they chose. The NFTs are the lifeblood of the game, they are the tools, lands, weapons, etc., These NFTs can be used or can be sold on the secondary market for profit.
This system is beginning to help NFT artists because land owners are beginning to offer NFT giveaways to the miners on their land, creating a system of rewards in addition to what the game is giving its players.
But why is it the most popular DaPP in the world? That's a great question with an even better answer. Money. If you live in certain parts of the world, mining trillium is a very lucrative way to make money. At the time of writing this article, trillium is worth about $0.60 USD which in some areas of the world, is a good amount of money.
