Indonesia has become the pandemic’s epicentre of Southeast Asia with more than 4 million COVID-19 cases and over 126,000 deaths as of August 23, 2021. Under such circumstances, Indonesians find themselves suffocating both literally and economically as the country faces a shortage of oxygen supply. The government has also recently extended its emergency lockdown measures which had been in place since the first week of July for the third time.

As Indonesia continues to grapple with the pandemic-induced crisis, Tokocrypto, the country’s leading and first to be regulated crypto exchange, has partnered with Aldi Haryopratomo (ex-CEO of GoPay), Evan Tan (NFT collector), William Tan (NFT creator for Art Blocks) and Chef Arnold Poernomo (celebrity chef) to organize Indonesia’s first NFT fundraising campaign supporting Oxygen for Indonesia. All the funds raised were donated to Oxygen for Indonesia, a neutral coalition created by the Indonesian startup ecosystem to help fight the pandemic by alleviating the shortage of oxygen supply in the country.

For the benefit of the uninitiated, this is the first-ever drop in the NFT space from Indonesian artist William Tan, whose project has been specially selected to be an Art Blocks Curated Project, and he is doing it all for a good cause with the help of crypto. Evan, who is William’s brother explains, “Will and I were actually figuring out how to donate the proceeds at first and were confused as to how to best utilize crypto funds of that size for charity. So, the partnering by Tokocrypto with Oxygen for Indonesia is simply brilliant. Allowing crypto donations made it very easy and efficient for us, while also allowing the funds to be used and deployed right away.”

Prior to the auction for the campaign on Tuesday, August 17, 2021, at 10:00 UTC/17:00 WIB, a Twitter Space session was held which had a huge turnout of more than 500 people, both local and international. The event was hosted on Chef Arnold’s Twitter Space with Aldi Haryopratomo, along with the other partners joining in on the session, who shared more about the state of oxygen supply in Indonesia as well as the objectives of the campaign.

It can be surmised that the campaign was a huge success as it managed to raise 222 Ethereum (ETH) — converted to roughly USD 700,000 — in less than 4 hours through the sale of 1,024 unique NFTs by way of a Dutch auction. Commenting on the success of the campaign, Aldi highlighted that “this was quite a significant amount as it comes up to about 10 billion Rupiah (IDR) which can be used to buy 7 oxygen plants to boost Indonesia’s oxygen supply levels.” Fair to say, the campaign has provided a lifeline to Indonesia’s healthcare system.

The significance of the campaign, as a momentous event, was aptly pointed out by the co-founder and CEO of Tokocrypto Pang Xue Kai, who closed the event by thanking the community, “This is indeed a historic moment as this is the very first NFT Art Charity Auction in Indonesia. A huge thanks to the crypto community for supporting this event, which will go down in the history books as the first and largest charity event thus far for Indonesia.”
