What’s are CryptoPunks?

CryptoPunks have been around for a long time. Before the big crypto bubble of 2017/18, and before Cryptokitties saw the light of day and congested the Ethereum blockchain with thousands of transactions.

CryptoPunks was created in 2017 by Matt and John from Larva Labs who called the project Cryptopunks, as a reference to the Cypherpunks who experimented with precursors to Bitcoin in the 1990s. Two early crypto pioneers from New York. The project is perhaps best described by the website:

“CryptoPunks are 10,000 uniquely generated characters. No two are exactly alike, and each one of them can be officially owned by a single person on the Ethereum blockchain. Originally, they could be claimed for free by anybody with an Ethereum wallet, but all 10,000 were quickly claimed. Now they must be purchased from someone via the marketplace that’s also embedded in the blockchain. Via this market, you can buy, bid on, and offer punks for sale.”

The 4 highest ever transactions were executed in May 2020.

Punk #6487 was sold on Sunday 25th of May 2020 for a whopping 100 ETH ($21k). This sale marked the highest ever executed transaction for a CryptoPunk.

Punk #8348 was sold on Wednesday the 20th of May 2020 for a cool 85 ETH ($18k). Before Punk #6487 sold this Punk held the coveted highest price sold award.

Punk #2386 followed the next day on Thursday the 21st of May 2020 for 77 ETH ($15k).

Both transactions were preceded by Punk #4513 selling on Saturday the 16th of May for 60 ETH (approx. $12k)
