“If you can keep your head when all around you are losing theirs,” Rudyard Kipling said, “you’ll be a Man, my son!” Others have since revised this to suggest that single-minded confidence isn’t quite such a virtue: “If you can keep your head while all around you are losing theirs, you have no grasp of the situation.” So what should we make of the palpable signs that confidence as normally measured is quite high?
