Ethereum Co-Founder Vitalik Buterin Declares “Bitcoin Cash Is Not Bitcoin”

Co-founder of the Ethereum blockchain Vitalik Buterin has aired his opinion on Bitcoin (BTC) and Bitcoin Cash (BCH). Buterin declared in a recent tweet that the two are not the same.

The tweet was in response to podcast host and Bitcoin proponent Brad Mills. In Mills’ tweet, the host called out the Ethereum co-founder for supposedly pushing a narrative that suggests that Bitcoin Cash is Bitcoin. Mills says Buterin does this because “it helps ETH”, also adding that doing this is “[Buterin’s] revenge for bitcoiners supporting ETC & trolling him relentlessly.

In response, Buterin simply defended himself by saying that “Bitcoin cash is not Bitcoin”, without saying any more.

Back in 2017 and months after the BTC hard fork which created BCH, Buterin posted a tweet in support of Bitcoin Cash. He wrote:

“I consider BCH a legitimate contender for the Bitcoin name. I consider bitcoin’s *failure* to raise block sizes to keep fees reasonable to be a large (non-consensual) change to the “original plan”, morally tantamount to a hard fork.”

This seemed like unwavering support for BCH, suggesting to many that he had taken BCH’s side. However, just a few minutes later, he posted another tweet that clarified his stand.

“That said, *right now*, I think trying to claim “BCH = Bitcoin” is a bad idea, as it *is* a minority opinion in the “greater bitcoin community”.

The Ethereum co-founder declared last year that some of his non-ethereum holdings include both Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash.
