The cryptocurrency-powered Brave browser has reportedly added one million new users in March, according to its head of marketing Des Martin.

In a tweet, Martin detailed that the browser added one million users in March, becoming part of only a handful of companies – which include Zoom, Slack, and HouseParty – to have added so many users amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Brave browser was funded through an initial coin offering (ICO) in which it sold Basic Attention Tokens (BAT). The BAT tokens can now also be earned for viewing ads on the browser that respect users’ privacy. Users can then hold onto the tokens or use them to reward content creators.

Late last year, CryptoGlobe reported the browser tripled the number of active users it has, surpassing 10 million per month after coming out of beta in October 2019. Last month, it surpassed four million daily active users, and 12 million monthly active users according to its CEO Brendan Eich.

While Brave’s adoption likely grew because of the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown, the growth also came the month it partnered with the TAP Network to let its users redeem BAT for “real-world rewards” with over 250,000 brands, including Xbox, PlayStation, Domino’s, Starbucks, and Uber.

Last month Brave also partnered with leading cryptocurrency exchange Binance, to let users trade crypto directly from their new tab pages. The partnership will see Brave add a BINANCE widget to the page by default.
