Yet another Tesla software update could be on the horizon. If you purchased the $7,000 Autopilot addon, your Tesla may soon have a software update to recognize and respond to traffic lights and stop signs.
The Tesla sales page current shows these as upcoming features for Autopilot.
- Recognize and respond to traffic lights
- Automatic driving on city streets.
The traffic light and stop sign recognition and response software is also shown in action in Tesla’s website in the autopilot section. Check out the video on the page.
At around the 1:30 mark in the video, you will see the software recognize the stop sign coming up at the intersection. The “medium range vehicle camera” picked up the stop sign and highlighted it purple to show Autopilot responding to the road sign.

A tweet from Out of Spec Motoring surfaced back in March 26, 2020 about this feature, it appears to show a Tesla running Autopilot able to recognize a red light and come to a complete stop at the light.

Elon Musk actually retweeted that video to show his approval on that date. Then on April 3rd, 2020, he responded to a tweet asking about the availability of this feature.
Hoping to roll out traffic lights & stops to wide US release in a few weeks & probably WW release in Q3 (so many variations in each country!). Very important to make sure this is done right.

Musk is pushing to have the feature rolled out in a future software update within “a few weeks” in the United States, and it will be available wordwide in the third quarter of 2020. It seem to be an aggressive timeline, and we have seen Musk pushing his team in the past. We’ll see if the Tesla team can make this happen in the next “few weeks.”
