UNICEF Has Announced Its Launch of A Cryptocurrency Fund To Receive Donations in BTC and ETH

The United Nations Children’s Fund, has decided to go the crypto way and has announced a digital currency fund, aimed at innovation of open-source technology and targeted at children in different corners of the world. According to the official as published, UNICEF will now accept donations for Ether (ETH) and (BTC), through what it calls the UNICEF Cryptocurrency Fund.

Henrietta Fore, the Executive Director at UNICEF, has expressed support for cryptocurrencies while stressing the need for UNICEF to get onboard and consider how it could benefit the organization in general. Fore said:

“This is a new and exciting venture for UNICEF. If digital economies and currencies have the potential to shape the lives of coming generations, it is important that we explore the opportunities they offer. That’s why the creation of our Cryptocurrency Fund is a significant and welcome step forward in humanitarian and development work.”

The announcement further notes that the Ethereum Foundation will become the first entity to support the new Crypto Fund with a donation. Now according to the foundation’s executive director, Aya Miyaguchi, speaking at Devcon, the foundation has sent 100 ETH (roughly $19,200) at press time. According to Miyaguchi, the Foundation is not only interested in supporting research and development for the Ethereum network, but also to increase the number of people who directly benefit from Ethereum and will continue to do so for many years to come.

The press releases also notes that all contributions received will be held in the specific digital currency through which it came, and also disbursed in the same way.
