Nestlé and Carrefour use blockchain for infant nutrition range

Nestleand Carrefour have collaborated on a blockchain project wherein the technologyis being applied to infant nutrition to improve customer buying experience interms of transparency and product quality.

Thetechnology will be used on the Swiss food and beverage giant’s entire GuigozBio 2 and 3 infant milk range that will allow shoppers to access completeinformation about the supply chain used to bring the product to the shelfthrough a scan of a QR code on the packaging.

Theaccessible information is provided by Laboratoires Guigoz, which aims to highlightits expertise and ensure the quality of its products. Both Nestle and Carrefourare members of the IBM Food Trust Platform and have already worked together onblockchain in France where they used the technology to Moussline puree products.

InJuly, Nestleentered into a partnership with the OpenSC blockchain platform to helpbring greater provenance to the supply chain. This association made the Swissfirm the first major food company in the world to pilot open blockchaintechnology and instigating transparency. The first stage of the pilot includedtracing milk from farms and producers in New Zealand to the company’s factoriesand warehouses in the Middle East region.

The previous month, Carrefour said its sales increased as a result of implementing blockchain to track meat, milk and fruit from farms to stores. The French retailer introduced blockchain information for 20 products, including chicken, eggs, raw milk, oranges, pork and cheese and planning to add 100 more by the year’s end.
