From the users perspective, think of gas on a blockchain likened to gas in a car. Without paying for gas, this machine cannot be operated!

In a decentralized, proof of blockchain, every transaction is validated by the network of nodes (other computers) who solve problems to form consensus on validations of transactions. Therefore, gas fees pay this network of computers for performing the validations of the transactions that we're engaging in!

In a decentralized proof of stake blockchain, nodes don't need to be compensated for running up electricity to perform validation- rather, node holders need to be compensated for providing liquidity and security through staking- there is still a gas fee, but it's much less, as it equates to a passive income for validators rather than an active income for miners.

Essentially, higher gas fees equals higher payments for the network. Therefore, paying more in gas fees, rather than less in gas fees, on a transaction, gives you either more or less priority for the speed of the validation of your transaction. Yes, you can change the amount of gas you choose to use.

Click the blue edit button. From there, you'll be presented a few different options. The transaction your seeing is a "send" tx.

For a send transaction, these few cents for a few seconds might not be a huge deal, but consider minting a rare NFT, or for traders, a crucial swap when the network is busy. The blue edit button on the confirmation page will always present this option-

Gas for Ethereum is measured in Gwei, which is essentially a very small piece of Ethereum (think Sats in Bitcoin.) 1 Ethereum token is comprised of 1 billion gwei.  This information will help you understand the various gas charts and trackers.
